Evacuation Update

MARCH 21, 2011 – All the animals have been safely returned to the animal shelter in Big Pine, after being cared for at the Bishop Veterinary Hospital during the Center Fire crisis. Thanks to all staff and volunteers who helped!

MARCH 19, 2011 – The Inyo County Animal Shelter was not damaged in the big brush fire that burned through Big Pine yesterday evening. The fire is not out yet, but authorities have given the go-ahead to move the animals back into the shelter facility on Sunday. They were moved to safety at the Bishop Veterinary Hospital in Bishop yesterday evening. Meanwhile, the shelter is open today in case any stray animals are brought in to the facility.

Breaking News: Shelter Evacuated

March 18th, 2011

A fire raging in Big Pine caused the evacuation of the shelter late Friday afternoon. All the animals were taken to Bishop Veterinary Hospital, where they are safe tonight.

A Big Pine Fire Department radio dispatcher said Friday evening that all residents west of Hwy 395 are under evacuation orders, and most horses in the area have been taken to the Tri-County Fairgrounds. “The fire is jumping all around town,” the dispatcher reported.

The shelter structure is threatened by fire tonight, as a high wind advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. We will keep you posted on what is happening as we learn more.

Dog Adoption Day–Winnie finds her forever home!

We had a gorgeous sunny day in front of Vons on Sunday for our Dog Adoption! Many people came to see and play with Mr. Rogers, Winnie, Shiloh and Peggy. It was Winnie’s lucky day–she went home with a great family who will give her the loving home she deserves.

Here is Winnie with Gary Williamson, the longtime manager of The Toggery in downtown Bishop, and Winnie’s new owner. Williamson and his wife attended the adoption event Feb. 13 with the hope of finding an older dog to bring home. They recently lost a beloved animal, and when they met Winnie, they felt a connection:
